Choosing a Contractor
Choosing a contractor requires a little homework. You need to know what questions to ask and what answers to look for, instead of just blindly picking someone out of the Yellow Pages or the classified ads.
Here are a few simple things to look for when you’re selecting a contractor:
Are they properly licensed and insured?
Any professional building contractor must have the following licenses and insurance:
- Construction Supervisor (Builder's) license
- Registered Home Improvement Contractor with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- Worker’s Compensation insurance
- General Liability insurance
Are they affiliated with any professional organizations?
Most professional contractors want to keep up with the latest industry trends and techniques to operate a successful business. That means belonging to at least several of the following:
- Builder’s Association of Central Mass.
- National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)
- Better Business Bureau
- Chamber of Commerce
Are they willing to share references?
A reputable contractor will be able to put you in touch with a number of customers willing to talk about their projects. Those references should be able to talk freely about any aspect of the project - be cautious with references who are vague or "unable" or unwilling to answer certain questions.
A reputable contractor will also be willing to take you to inspect current and completed projects.
